My love of baking comes from the amazing Black women in my life. My Nana (my paternal grandma) grew up and resided in Bermuda where she served her community for decades by offering pies, tarts, cookies, scones, and cakes. My parents would send me and my sister to Bermuda for summers to spend time with his family. My Nana didn’t like people in her kitchen space but she allowed me to observe her, and occasionally, contribute. She never used measuring tools nor did she ever reference a cook book. She cooked from her heart and served love to her community.
I would spend Thanksgivings with my mother’s family, as they are American and observe the holiday. We would drive a dozen hours from Wisconsin to Arkansas to stay with our Grandpa. Unfortunately, my maternal grandma passed before I was born, so I was raised in the kitchen by my aunts and my grandpa’s wife. They taught me the ways of sweet potato pie, peach cobbler, and buttermilk biscuits. As I got older, I developed my own recipes and shared them with family.
After years of urging from friends, family, loved ones, and coworkers, I created Sweet Black Magic at the start of 2023. Baking is my therapy and love language and I hope my creations feed and touch members of the greater Bay Area community.
